$2.4 million grant aimed at helping families hurt by addiction

Several northern Colorado agencies will share a federal grant totaling nearly $2.4 million to help the nameless, faceless victims of meth addiction — children.

The grant will fund the Northeast Colorado Child Welfare Project to help people with any addiction and their families, but methamphetamine will be a prime target because of its widespread use in Weld and Larimer counties.

Study: serious mental illness cuts life expectancy

Serious mental illness can lower a person’s life expectancy by 25 years, according to a new study which Colorado doctors say the state should consider as it drafts a health-insurance plan.

Durango High School opens clinic

Durango High School students have a new clinic to take their coughs, rashes and more serious problems to. The school’s health clinic officially opened Monday after nearly three years in the making.

Durango School District 9-R staff and administrators touted the clinic as a way to provide health care for students who lack insurance or transportation. The clinic will provide students with immediate help with physical or mental-health issues, school staff said.

Competencies for Substance Abuse Treatment Clinical Supervisors

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) announces the availability of Technical Assistance Publication (TAP) 21-A: Competencies for Substance Abuse Treatment Clinical Supervisors.  This research and consensus-based publication provides practical, clear lists of the competencies necessary for effective supervision in substance abuse treatment programs. It also provides administrators with step-by-step guidelines to implement structured supervision components in both State and private treatment systems.

First lady Ritter praises local mental-health care

Colorado first lady Jeannie Ritter is traveling the state to understand the mental-health challenges facing each community. In Southwest Colorado, she said she was impressed with what she saw.

"There’s some real leadership here," she said during an interview Thursday in Durango.

She lauded the community for having the foresight to wed its mental health services with its medical facilities, ensuring problems of the mind and body are treated together. Click here to read the full Durango Herald article.
